Tip: About Acrylic Finishes
Acrylic finishes are a blend of 100% acrylic copolymers, an aggregate composed of marble or quartz, liquid pigments and other proprietary ingredients. This "high performance" finish was originally designed for use through an exterior insulating finish system called EIFS.
EIFS is designed to be flexible and crack resistant. Therefore, the finish must have the same properties as the rest of the assembly. While acrylic finishes will not stop portland cement plaster from cracking, they have a higher quality of crack resistance than cement-based finishes.
Acrylic finishes have other qualities that make them a more popular alternative to cement stucco finishes: namely color. Topcoats use very stable "wet pigments" to color the product as a whole. Together with a specially formulated 100% acrylic binder, these stabilized pigments promote excellent resistance to fading, chalking and yellowing. As a result, finishes tend to retain their original appearance over time.
Acrylic finishes provide a consistent and durable finish to your gypsum components with unlimited color options. Many textures are also available for your design needs. "Special" finishes offer additional aesthetic options and/or higher "scratch resistance" than standard finishes.
Many acrylic finishes incorporate anti-smudge technology in their products. This "DPR" technology allows the finish to cure into a tough, non-stick coating that prevents the build-up of dirt, mold and contaminants.
Omega also offers "upgrades" of standard acrylic finishes, including: adding a "lightweight" finish to make it more "user friendly," adding silicone for durability to withstand the most damaging environmental conditions, and adding a "lightweight" finish to the product. Added fungicides in the manufacturing process are designed to provide additional resistance to fungal and algal growth.
Another advantage of acrylic finishes is that they have lower moisture permeability than cement plaster. The acrylic finish will not darken or discolor in prolonged rainstorms. They also add weatherability to Portland cement components while still allowing the components to breathe.
The "Smooth Steel Trowel" finish is not recommended. Applying a "smooth" finish requires the substrate beneath the finish to be very smooth, and smoothing a stucco brown coating is difficult at best and an expensive process.
A fine-grit or coarse-grit finish is recommended over traditional gypsum brown coats. It is also recommended to apply an acrylic primer that matches the finish color over the brown coat before applying the finish. This will allow the finish to dry evenly and the end result will be a more consistent and "brighter" colored wall!
